Protection and Safety

Purpose Statement
The Protection and Safety System works in partnership with other groups to make sure that the abused, neglected, dependent, or delinquent populations that it serves are:
  • safe from harm or maltreatment;
  • in a permanent healthy nurturing and caring environment;
  • with a stable family;
  • helped to heal from the harmful effects on their lives, and
  • no longer threats to their community. that communities are safe from harm by these children or youth.
Populations Served
Protection and Safety serves abused and neglected children and juvenile offenders.

Abused and neglected children are:

  • Children who lack proper parental care due to the fault or habits of the parent;
  • Children whose parents can not provide care through no fault of their own;
  • Children whose parents give up their rights to the child in writing to the State; and
  • Children that are wards of another State agency for which child placement is requested.

Juvenile offenders are:

  • Youth breaking laws such as truancy or being a runaway;
  • Youth breaking criminal law.

There are two youth correction facilities in Nebraska.  The facility for females is located in Geneva and the facility for males is located in Kearney.

Partnership Approach
Protection and Safety work together with many groups to improve the lives of Nebraska's youth. These groups include:

  • field staff and central office employees;
  • law enforcement;
  • county attorneys;
  • judges;
  • guardians ad litem and court appointed special advocates;
  • medical personnel;
  • therapists;
  • foster parents;
  • group homes and institutional care providers;
  • schools;
  • care providers, and
  • the children, youth, and families.
