Populations Served
Protection and Safety serves abused and neglected children and juvenile offenders.
Abused and neglected children are:Children who lack proper parental care due to the fault or habits of the parent;
Children whose parents can not provide care through no fault of their own;
Children whose parents give up their rights to the child in writing to the State;
and
Children that are wards of another State agency for which child placement is
requested.
Juvenile offenders are:Youth breaking laws such as truancy or being a runaway;
Youth breaking criminal law.
There are two youth correction facilities in Nebraska. The facility for
females is located in Geneva and the facility for
males is located in Kearney.
Partnership Approach
Protection and Safety work together with many groups to improve the lives of Nebraska's
youth. These groups include:
- field staff and central office employees;
- law enforcement;
- county attorneys;
- judges;
- guardians ad litem and court appointed special advocates;
- medical personnel;
- therapists;
- foster parents;
- group homes and institutional care providers;
- schools;
- care providers, and
- the children, youth, and families.
